Why Yoga Isn’t About Flexibility
Mary Doyle | SEP 1, 2025
The thing I hear most oftern about yoga is “I’m not flexible enough to do it.”
If that’s ever crossed your mind, I want to reassure you: yoga has never been about how bendy you are.

The truth is, most people start yoga with stiff muscles and tight bodies. I certainly did. Over time you will get more flexible and you will move more easily but that is only part of the picture.
At its heart, yoga is about connection — with your body, your breath, and your inner calm. It’s a way to pause, to notice how you feel, and to give your nervous system a chance to rest.
Think of it like this:
Yoga is a practice, not a performance. No one is giving out medals for how deep your forward fold is. No one else cares.
Yoga about how you feel, not how you look. A single deep calming breath can be just as powerful as a tricky pose, in fact probably more so.
Yoga can be adapted for any body. Chair yoga, restorative yoga, and simple floor poses all count as yoga.
It's not about how flexible you are. It's about finding calmness, clarity, and that place on ineer peace.
Curiosity and an interest in how your body feels
A willingness to notice your breath and to breathe a little more deeply, a little slower
The capacity to step outside your comfort zone to try something new, and discover the very many ways yoga can improve your life.
Touching your toes is never required.
If you’ve been putting off yoga because you think you're not flexible enough, consider this your gentle invitation to try. You might be surprised by how much calmer, steadier, and more connected you feel — even after just one class.
